Light novels are basically the Japanese version of Young Adult fiction. They bridge the gap between manga and genre fiction published for a mainstream, adult audience. While the quality varies, there are a fair number of really great books, far better than the vomitous crap I slogged through when I was in Junior High. Piers Anthony, I'm looking at you.
